Maktab Anbar
Rising in the heart of Damascus’s Old City, Maktab Anbar tells its story through both its walls and its past. Commissioned in the late 19th century by the wealthy banker and merchant Yusuf Anbar, the residence was conceived as a statement of prestige, blending the elegance of late Ottoman Damascene architecture with subtle European influences. Its three interconnected courtyards — each framed by arcaded iwans, marble inlaid floors, and fountains — were designed to separate public reception, private family life, and service areas, reflecting the social customs of the time. Painted wooden ceilings, stained glass windows, and intricate stone mosaics speak of the city’s master artisans, while the building’s later transformation into a prestigious preparatory school adds another layer to its identity. Today, restored as a cultural center, Maktab Anbar stands as both a showcase of Damascus’s architectural refinement and a living witness to the city’s shifting fortunes over more than a century.
